Description

14.25 inches in diameter. This is a Seder Tray for Passover to put the ritual foods on. The rim states in Hebrew "Matzah Bitter Herbs" and shows these foods. The center has a scene of Moses dividing the Red Sea. In gorgeous condition. It does not have any cracks, chips, or even one "flea bite" rim chip. No repairs or restoration. The gilt Hebrew lettering is all intact and the purple colors of the transfer print are strong and vibrant. Hallmarked on reverse for the Sarreguemines Faience firm in France, this mark dates to between 1875 and 1899.
This is very difficult to find. Shown in the black and white photos are from the 1985 book "A Collector's Guide to Judaica" by Jay Weinstein. He shows and describes a slightly larger version of this tray made by a different porcelain firm in France at the same time. The auction example I was able to locate was from Geneva, Switzerland in 1989. Notice the 1,500 - 2,000 Swiss Franc estimate (that currency has always been worth more than the dollar), which does not include the buyers premium. And that estimate is 31 years old.
